  • All of this information sounded very intriguing to me, and added to my eagerness to learn more. What fascinated me the most was the fact that this technique could be applied to any situation. By the second class, Prof Turgeon began to work with the students using certain preliminary exercises. This is where I began to have my doubts. I now realize that I was perhaps misinterpreting Prof Turgeon’s intent, but at the time I was thoroughly disappointed. I felt as though he was asking us to make assumptions which were, in my opinion, unacceptable. Specifically in regards to my situation, I was asked to assume the physical characteristics of the Professor, through examination of his body language and facial expressions. I explained to him that I had a problem with such assumptions, and that I couldn’t possibly understand what was going through his mind based solely on body language. Since I was given the choice whether or not to continue with the exercise—another fundamental law of NLP—I chose not to. As the weeks continued, I watched with interest as he guided the other students through their performances, touching on various issues that

were unique to them, yet understandable to the rest of the class. It was not until Prof Turgeon explained the function of the Meta Model that I understood exactly how the process worked. The guide, in this case Prof Turgeon, does not make assumptions or pass judgment, and most certainly does not try to use the power of suggestion to work with the subject, in this case the students. The questions that are asked are of an intentionally vague nature, in order to elicit a response from the student. It is only then that the guide can continue, asking further questions based solely on these responses. It is the student who is doing all of the discovering, while the guide is providing an objective voice.
